Chuenhwei Nelson Ho (何春暉)

October 28, 1949 - April 1, 2021

Chuenhwei Nelson Ho (何春暉), 71, a resident of Cape Coral, FL since 2016, formerly of Pennsylvania and Taiwan, passed away on April 1, 2021 in Cape Coral. He was born October 28, 1949 in Taiwan to Shichen Ho (何世臣) and Zhou Changqiong Ho (周昌琼), now deceased.

Chuenhwei emigrated to America to pursue higher education at 25. Through hard work and persistence, he acquired two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. He worked at various companies, rising to VP of Environmental Compliance and Safety. Thirty years ago, he also started NEJC Corp., his own environmental consulting company. He traveled at least 200 days a year helping his clients and efficiently solving their problems. Besides being successful in his profession, he was a great friend, brother, son, husband, and father, and crucial in his children’s success. He unconditionally sacrificed and provided the best of everything for his family. On the side, he loved watching and playing sports, especially golf and tennis.

Chuenhwei always supported and believed in his children in all of their endeavors. He could have retired but chose to work and continue to help his clients. Not long ago, he said that he had accomplished everything he wanted and could not ask for more from this life. He returned from his last work trip on March 13th. After falling ill, he canceled his next trips, but he truly did work until the end. He will be remembered as kind, wise, diligent, capable, and resilient. But most of all, to his wife and children, he will be remembered as in the song,

“The Wind Beneath My Wings,”:

“It must have been cold there in my shadow

To never have sunlight on your face

You were content to let me shine, that’s your way

You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory

While you were the one with all the strength

A beautiful face without a name for so long

A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you’re my hero

And everything I would like to be?

I can fly higher than an eagle

For you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed

But I’ve got it all here in my heart

I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it

I would be nothing without you…”

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Yulan (眭幼蘭); three loving children, Dominique (何欣倫), Jonathan (何杰倫), and Jessica (何纤玉); as well as five siblings, Chuen Rae Ho (何春蕤), Chuen Yee Ho (何春仪), Chuen Lu Ho (何春菉), Chuen Xun Ho (何春勳), and Chuen Huan Ho (何春寰).

No formal services are planned due to Covid-19.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in memory of Chuenhwei Ho: St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mullins Memorial Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cape Coral, is entrusted with final care.

    Dear Ho Family,

I am deeply saddened to tears on learning of Nelson’s passing. Just recently I worked with Nelson on what I guess is now his last published article.

I had no idea of his illness, and he never let on. Nelson was one of the most valued people in the printing industry. He probably saved many lives, companies, and jobs by his assistance with environmental compliance, Nelson was always so giving of his wisdom, time, support, and overall generosity. This will take awhile to get over.

My deepest condolences to all of Nelson’s family and friends.

Nelson was a part of my family for 47 years. Soon after he arrived in the US he was included in many family times in my home and in activities with my children. We grew to love him and his sweet family. We appreciated him as a wonderful, caring person and who enjoyed having a good time. He showed he also was very thoughtful in many ways through the years. Since he moved away from our town, he would call on Mother’s Day , Thanksgiving Day or just to talk when he was on a business trip. He came for my husband’s funeral even tho it was a long distance away. We are so sad and shocked at his untimely death. We will miss him so much but we are comforted in the knowledge that he was able to work right up to the last few days and live a full life.

I had the honor of working with Nelson at GATF in Pittsburgh when he was the Environmental consultant. Nelson made a lasting impression on me and many other coworkers. He was the type of person that didn’t say much, but when he did talk it was incredibly relevant and important. Nelson helped so many printing companies during his career. The last time we talked it had to have been during a trade show in Chicago many years ago.
    Adieu my friend, Frank Kanonik

We, Nelson’s younger sisters and brother, living in Canada, the US, China, and Taiwan, were shocked and saddened by his passing.

Nelson always came across as in good health and good spirit on the few occasions when the family met, to the extent that we knew nothing of his underlying illnesses. Nor were we aware of his struggle with Covid in these last few weeks. His last Wechat messages to the family group on March 18 introduced us to a hilarious short video that he found on line, and he was obviously in good spirit, dreaming about traveling on one of China’s slow trains that traverse the mountainous regions. Now looking back, we understand he was taking care not to burden us with his own conditions.

As the eldest brother in the family, he had been entrusted by our parents to care for us, which he did, and he fulfilled all the duties of the first-born son, even traveling to China three times to see to the details of our mother’s entombment and the renovation of the family burial grounds, suffering a near-fatal dehydration at one time. He was our mother’s favorite son and our most loving older brother, and he will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace, Nelson, your burdens are now finally lifted.

It was long time ago, we started calling each other Ho Lao Ye and Tang Lao Ye. It was probably meant to be humorous because neither of us were “Lao Ye”. In the old China, “Lao Ye” was the boss in the family as well as in the society with respect and money. It was at the time we struggled with taking care of our little ones, trying to make everyone happy in the family or in the society we lived in. We were anything but Lao Ye in real life. It became a special nick name between us. I started to think when did I first met Nelson. Could it be 1978 when he and his wife drove all the way from Ann Arbor to visit us in Oxford, Ohio in a heavy snow day, or could it be even earlier? Suddenly, a picture surfaced, I saw Nelson in a handsome Military Police uniform in Wei Dai Rd. Tai Chung, Taiwan probably in 1973 or 1974. Wei Dao Rd. was where his girlfriend Ellan (Sui in Chinese) and my girlfriend shared an apartment in college. Forty seven long years passed in a blink of eyes, more sadly, it stopped in another blink of eyes, by a call from Nelson’s phone. I answered the phone but didn’t greet him as Ho Lao Ye as usual. It was Sui dropped the sad news that Nelson passed. She has always been a super strong lady, but I was crushed.
Nelson and I went through so much together ever since we came to the Land of opportunity in the 70s. Nelson had been like an older brother to me. From 1986 to 1990, I talked to Nelson at lunch time almost every day in the week. He was not only my brother but also supporter in time of difficulties. Our visit with each other had to stopped due to my assessment in China for 21 years. We communicated a lot frequently since I returned to U.S. We became friends on LINE. Of cause, we were in no hurry, life slowed down at our age and we had so much time to catch up. Nelson was very healthy and positive as always till our last phone call in March. He just had his last business trip.
I am still processing this sad news. Above is a small part of a letter I wrote to Nelson. I asked Sui to put the letter aside him to let him know how thankful I am to have a friend like Ho Lao Ye and how thankful for the loving and caring he gave to me. Love, Tang Lao Ye

I am so sorry to learn Nelson’s sudden passing. I have many fond memories of Nelson for all the years I know him.
The Friday night league organized by Nelson and Ellen provided many years of fun and competition among our friends and children. That was something our family looked forward to on the weekends. Nelson and Ellen tirelessly and selflessly arranged the whole event so that we can play. Nelson was a very good player and later on he surpassed us all in the technical aspect of game when he became the personal stringer for his children. He could string a tennis racquet under 30 minutes – that is professional speed.
For many years we could expect a fun gathering on New Year’s Eve at Nelson and Ellen’s house with a very large group of people. While the adults chatted to catch up with each other, the children played among themselves. Nelson circulated among us to provide food and drinks. We had champagne to cheer while the ball dropped for the count down. Always there was too much food. When we left after midnight there was a big mess for Nelson and Ellen to clean up. Despite this, we would still have the party year after year so that we could get together.
Nelson, thank you for all the fond memories. May you rest in peace.
Your friend Nick and Lih Jen.

    Dear Ho family,
I am so sorry to hear this news.
I fondly remember Nelson and Ellen through junior tennis where our sons trained and “battled” together.
Nelson and Ellen were so kind to include my son (Corey) and me when we visited Pittsburgh and when the kids were on the road.
What a lovely., devoted and successful family.
We wish your whole family our warmest wishes and fondest memories.

    Dear Ho Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. I had worked with Nelson for the last 20 years. He was not only brilliant in his profession he was a first class individual. He taught me so much not only about environmental issues he also taught me about life. He often talked about how proud he was of his children . He will be sorely missed.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your husband, father and my old friend, Nelson. He and I worked on a number of projects 20 years ago while I was at ADP out of Jersey City and he was our consultant.
But more importantly, we didn’t work as “workers”. We worked as friends. What a joy it was to have met, known and worked with him. All our lives are better for having him be a part of it.
