David Paul Adams
David Paul Adams, 93, a resident of Sanibel Island, Lee County since 1987, formerly of Essex Fells, NJ, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022 in Cape Coral, FL. He was born August 16, 1928 in Montclair, NJ to Paul and Elizabeth Adams.
David (“Dave”) was a Veteran of the United States Army and was of the Episcopalian faith. Dave spent his early years in Upper Montclair and Essex Fells, and 16 summers at the Robin Hood Camp in Maine as camper and counselor. He attended Andover Academy where he participated in student government, lacrosse and track & field. After Andover, he attended Princeton University, graduating in 1951. At Princeton, he was Chairman of the Inter-club council, Member of the President’s Committee of 50, President of Cap & Gown and a midfielder on the 1951 National Champion lacrosse team.
Following Princeton, Dave served for 8 years with the Central Intelligence Agency in Iran, during the tumultuous years of the 1953 coup d’etat and its aftermath. He retired from the CIA in 1959 and worked over the ensuing decade with SB Peonick & Co. and Proctor & Gamble before starting his own consulting company, David Adams & Co. Dave’s affable demeanor and perspicacity enabled him to build an impressive list of clientele over the years that attracted the attention of Peet Marwick & Mitchell, the world’s largest accounting firm at the time (now KPMG). Peet Marwick acquired David Adams & Co. and Dave continued with the accounting powerhouse for some years. In the latter years of his career he partnered with foreign exchange guru John Taylor in launching FX Concepts, a foreign exchange rate forecasting company.
Beginning in the 1940s, Dave spent his summers at Corlear Bay Club on Lake Champlain where he was an avid tennis player, golfer, boater, hiker, horseman and all around outdoorsman. Dave loved being with his children and grandchildren, always taking active interest in their lives. His morning song to the slew of grandchildren at the breakfast table of “Good morning breakfast lovers, and howdy doody!” would always bring the house down with a chorus of laughter. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was an avid reader, keen intellect and engaging conversationalist. He always sought to do the little things in life that touch people in ways that would bring a smile to their face, and impart some memory for which they were grateful.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Cynthia Adams of Fort Myers; three loving children, Susan Thomas (Kevin) of Brielle, NJ, Michael Adams (Anyes) of Switzerland, and Peter Adams (Diana) of Stamford, CT; nine grandchildren; as well as sixteen great grandchildren.
