Dr. Robert “Bob” W. Cousar, Jr.
Dr. Robert Wilbur Cousar, Jr. (Bob), 93, a resident of Upper Captiva Island, FL for the past 21 years, formerly of Atlanta, GA, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018, in Cape Coral. He was born December 4, 1924, in Portsmouth, VA, to Robert Wilbur and Irving Blanton Cousar, Sr., now deceased.
Bob was a retired Minister with the Presbyterian Church, USA, Peace River Presbytery, but after retirement has been pastoring the Upper Captiva Island Chapel since its founding. Prior to that he and his wife, Sue Ann, served as missionaries in the Amazon Rain Forest of Brazil for thirteen years in church planting: on the Trans-Amazon Highway near Altamira, PA; in Parintins, AM; and Tefé, AM. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WW II as a P-47 pilot and then returned home to get his B.S. from University of Chattanooga, TN, followed by B.Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA, and Ph.D. from University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Bob pastored churches in Charlotte, NC; Brandon, FL; Monroe, GA; Lynnville, TN; and also taught four years at King College, Bristol, TN.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Sue Ann Washington Cousar of Upper Captiva Island, FL (formerly from Atlanta, GA); five loving children, Nellie Anne Dennis of Atlanta, GA, Mary Louise Person (Tom) of Amesbury, MA, Leonora Almeida of Atlanta, GA, Allan Wayne Yarbrough (Laura) of Dayton, OH, and Bradley Nelson Yarbrough (Angela) of Roanoke, VA; brother, John Burton Cousar of St. Simons Island, GA; sister in law, Betty Bowen Cousar of Decatur, GA; eleven grandchildren, Nicole, Kathryn, Brian, Andrew, Anna, Natalia, Rachel, Grace, Elizabeth, Caleb and Tessa; one great grandchild; as well as nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Blanton Cousar; as well as a granddaughter, Brooke Person.
Memorial Services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Upper Captiva Island Chapel, 4580 Hidden Lane, Upper Captiva Island, FL; and on Sunday, July 8, 2018, 2:00pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2461 Peachtree Rd. N.E., Atlanta, GA 30305.
