James Raymond O’Brien

November 4, 1948 - June 14, 2022

James Raymond O’Brien, 73, a resident of Lee County since 1999, formerly of Cleveland, OH, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2022 in North Fort Myers, FL. He was born November 4, 1948 in Lakewood, OH to Vincent and Cleo O’Brien, now deceased.

James was of the Christian faith and a loving husband and father. He was a successful businessman having continuously operated his own garage door/opener installation company for nearly 50 years in both Ohio and Florida. He was a friend to many and an active member of his community helping others with anything he possibly can, and he takes great pride that the community Christmas decorations live on since him and his wife started them in 2010. He loved his 4 boys and was extremely proud of all of their accomplishments. Most importantly, he LOVED his grandchildren and great grandchildren and cherished his role as their “Poppy”. He relished any opportunity he could to spoil his grandchildren and often found a mutual love for ice cream (Poppy ice cream sandwiches) one of many memories they will always remember him by.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara O’Brien of North Fort Myers; children, Travis O’Brien (Patt) of Alexandria, VA, Adam O’Brien of Virginia Beach, VA, Shane O’Brien (Kristen) of Columbus, OH, and Brandon O’Brien (Kelly) of Greenville, SC; siblings, Eileen Bak of Sun City, FL, Barbara Robinson (David) of The Villages, FL, Maggie O’Brien of Sarasota, FL, Ruthie O’Brien of Sarasota, Tom O’Brien (Anne) of Sugarland, TX; grandchildren, Whitney Morgan, Tori Jacobs, Katey O’Brien, Jacob O’Brien, Presley O’Brien, and Isla O’Brien; as well as great grandchildren, Gracelynn Jacobs, Lee Morgan, and JJ Morgan.

Man what to say about my dad. My dad was one of the most kind hearted caring people I have ever known. He loved everyone and seen the good in people. He taught me how to be a man and become the man I am today. I remember when I was a kid and he worked at a company called J and J jet skii sales and we had to go get a boat on lake Erie. Well he is on front “bow” of the boat pushing and im on the side helping. As we push this boat off a floating dock I hear a SPLASH and my dad is gone so I had to jump into what I do mode save him or boat……AH HE CAN SWIM boat it is haha. So 25 plus years later we still laugh about it to this day. He taught me how to operate a boat and gave me a career that to this day 22 years later I still do. He never had a negative thing to say about anyone always full of happiness and joy. The garage door man of Del Tura. Love you dad miss you so much.

Jimmy was my mentor when I left the farm for city life & bartending.. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend or wing man. I look forward to when we meet again- you are truly one of a kind.

Jim was one honest and good man. He was one of the first people my husband and I met when we moved to Del Tura 8 years ago. We are blessed to have known him. I pray that the family will find strength and comfort in all the memories he left you with. Blessings to your family from ours.

    To Barbie and Family,
Loosing this wonderful gentleman was a terrible shock for David and Myself….
OB1 ( as I called him), was a gentle, strong, sincere, kind and loving man!!! He will be missed by all!!! We, David and myself were very grateful and honored to get to know him, and Barbie… Vacations, card nights etc! We had the pleaser of his, and Barbies company visiting us in our NY home… teaching him about horses and racing in Saratoga! Ah, he was NOT happy when his horse picks DIDNT come in first! We had so much fun and laughs loosing money!
Our love and prayers are being sent to you all….. Knowing Mr. Jim OBrien was blessing from God!

Jim was one of a kind. Anytime we needed Jim, he came. Installed a new garage operator when we needed it and always came back to oil it with a smile and kind words. You were called to heaven way too soon Jim and will be missed by all of Deltura.
