Joan Marie Handel (nee Cox)

Joan Handel passed on June 11, 2020 after a short illness. She was fortunate to have lived independently up until shortly before the end of her life. She knew this was a blessing and appreciated it every day.
Joan was born on November 17, 1929 in Highland Park, Michigan to Conrad and Harriet Cox. Joan joined the Air Force and served as an intelligence officer in the 10th Air Division. While serving at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, she met Wilfred “Bill” Handel Jr., a pilot. They were married on May 15, 1955. As they traveled throughout the country, Joan began attending college eventually graduating from the University of Maryland. Joan and Bill settled in Eau Claire, Wisconsin after Bill retired from the Air Force in 1971. They enjoyed spending time at their houses in Lake Holcombe and Fort Myers. Joan was a talented artist specializing in cross-stitching and water color painting.
Joan is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bill. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Cox of Madison, WI, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law JoAnne (Handel) and Kenneth McCormick of Madison, WI, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law David and Carol (Niederriter) Handel of O’Fallon, IL, and her nephew, Christopher Handel also of O’Fallon, IL. She is further survived by her nephews Ken (Ann) McCormick and Bill (Marlo) McCormick both of New Berlin, WI
Because of COVID, a private service was held.
