Minuccio Roberto Maffei

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Former Oakwood resident Minuccio Maffei, 92, of Cape Coral, Fla., a retired excavator, died Saturday in Heritage Park Care and Rehabilitation Center, Fort Myers, Fla, where he had resided since 2014.

Born and educated in Naples, Italy, he served in the Italian army. His family owned a farm and took pride in sustaining themselves as well as neighbors and friends with the food that they grew.

He immigrated to the United States in 1953, moving to Oakwood. In 1991, he relocated to the Catskills, and he settled in Cape Coral in 2001. A member of Local 731, Excavators Union, he had worked as an excavator for 40 years. He was a member of the Italian American Club in Cape Coral. While living on the Island, Mr. Maffei was a devout parishioner of St. Charles R. C. Church. In Florida, he attended St. Katharine Drexel R.C. Church.

He enjoyed listening to classical music, playing bocce, hunting and watching soccer, and was a devoted family man, cherishing his loved ones.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Lucia Leuci; his sons, Alfonso and Joseph; his daughter, Piera Allan; his sister, Catherine Baratta and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday, February 5, 2015 from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Charles Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
