Richard “Dick” H. Mapes
Richard “Dick” Harding Mapes, 77, a resident of North Fort Myers, FL since 1988, formerly of Akron, OH, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017 in Cape Coral, FL. He was born May 1, 1940 in Akron, OH to Robert and Dorothy Mapes, now deceased.
Dick was a member of Guiding Light Community Church in North Fort Myers. After his family, he was most proud of being a girls’ softball coach in Akron Ohio, taking them to Texas for tournament play. He played baseball (catcher) and umpired many years in Akron. As a young man after being severely injured in the Navy, he went on to race stock cars, worked as installer at Pepsi, and while coaching, ran large paper cutting machines at a paper label factory. He and first wife Pauline, deceased, moved to North Fort Myers, Fl in 1988 where he took up Shuffleboard and became Professional.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 13 years, Doris Mapes of North Fort Myers; three loving children, Debbie Reynolds (Jim) of Akron, OH, Scott Mapes of Akron, OH and Brian Mapes of Alliance, OH; step daughters, Norma Beck, Lynn DeLuca, and Deborah (Tom) Cowell, all of Akron, OH; a sister, Roberta Byers of Akron, OH and FL; nineteen grandchildren; as well as seven great grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Guiding Light Community Church, 1360 Touchstone Rd., North Ft. Myers, FL 33903 with Rev. Anthony officiating.
Graveside Services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH with Pastor Joe Pryor officiating.
