Velga “Val” R. Granger
Velga “Val” R. Granger, 65, a resident of Cape Coral, FL for the past five years, formerly of Oakland Park, FL and Toledo, OH, passed away Friday, January 18, 2019 in Cape Coral. She was born February 24, 1953 in Toledo, OH to Oscar Kops and Dzidra Trops, now deceased.
Velga was raised in the Lutheran faith and attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church throughout her life. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, Ohio. She received the highest award upon her graduation The Bishop’s Cross. 30 years ago she moved to Florida and never looked back. She loved the sun and the beach. Every year along with her beloved Mother and step father she vacationed at the beach. Every year she looked forward to spending her time with her family at the beach. She loved to travel and see new things.
She was a lifelong waitress. During her career she worked mostly with Sheraton Hotels. She received many awards that she was very proud of throughout those years.The past four years she had worked at Farmer’s Market in Ft Myers FL. They were her “second family”. Her co-workers have described her as “sweet and a kind-hearted soul”. She had several regulars that visited her daily. She was the best server and cared for her customers. Velga’s true hobby was playing Bingo. On any given night you could find her yelling “BINGO” at Pondella Bingo in N. Ft Myers.Recently she had been playing Euchre with other Ohioan transplants twice a month. All of this was second to her love of her grandson, Joshua Allen. Ask anyone and they will tell you he was her pride and joy.
The past five years she lived with her daughter, Beth and son-in-law, James along with her faithful companion Milton whom she adored completely; as well as her two “dog grandbabies, Cookie and Buster”.She loved her family completely and without judgement. She will truly be missed every day.
She is survived by two loving children, Elizabeth Granger and son in law, James Allen of Cape Coral, and Kimberly Granger of Wauseon, OH; three loving siblings, Val Kops (Nancy), Ed Kops (Patty), and Karen Kepes, all of OH; grandson, Joshua Allen and his girlfriend, Ashlee Hickox of Fort Myers, FL; several nieces and nephews; step father, Vilnis Trops of Riga, Latvia; as well as Milton the dog, her faithful companion.
Velga was preceded in death by a son, Fred “Shorty” Granger, III.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:30 PM on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at The Farmer’s Market Restaurant, 2736 Edison Ave., Fort Myers, FL 33916.
